Miracle League

This morning, bright and early this morning, Baby Gurl, The Boy and I went with Baby Gurl's Girl Scout Troop to help with the Miracle League. I'm sure all of you reading this have a Miracle League in your community, even if it goes by a different name. Miracle League is a baseball league for the physically and mentally disabled.

The three of us acted as buddies to two of the players (Baby Gurl, being so small, tag-teamed with mama to help).

It was an awesome experience! For those who don't know, I work as a paraprofessional (teacher's aid) in a self-contained extreme and profound handicapped classroom. My life has been blessed by the four people in my class. I am thankful that my children are exposed to those who are less fortunate than they.

Helping out people who are less fortunate - either by lack of income, physically or mentally - is a great way to take the focus off yourself. Today, Baby Gurl's and my mantra became: It's not about me.

I feel blessed to work with such special people. I am thankful that my kids are exposed to these wonderful people and get to know them as they truly are: people just like them with special needs.

I urge y'all to get involved. It starts out as an opportunity to help others. But what you end up walking away with a blessing and an understanding bigger than you ever thought possible.

Until next time...

  1. That's so very generous and thoughtful of y'all. We try to do that also, but I enjoy being with elderly more. That's our 'out reach'. Just being kind to those who need a smile or a ride to the grocery store one time or a backedup pond pipe. Kindness is never wasted. :o) Keep up the good works!
((Hugs)) to you and your family neighbor ~ ♥ ∞

  2. How wonderful! I think volunteering your time is a great way to get involved and to encourage selflessness in our lives. Before my health had gotten kinda rough here recently I tried to get out and do something in the community at least once a month. My dream is to speak to communities to increase mental health awareness and decrease the stigma surrounding mental illness. God willing someday it will happen. :-)

    Hugs to you!

  3. Reaching out to the elderly is a great outreach, Sparky! Too often, our elderly and our handicapped get ignored.

Awhile back (before I started teaching Sunday School), my adult Sunday School Class would go to a local retirement home. We specifically asked for those who never got visitors. It was always so very sad that these people would be 'locked away' in this home and forgotten. A shame, really. The women we visited were DOLLS!

Julie, God willing, you will be able to speak to communities. And based on God's track record, it will be right in the middle of your health problems! LOL But I believe you'll get to do it.
