Lazy Sunday Post

An amazing thing happened this week: I was actually productive, getting everything I needed to get done, done with "tie" to spare on my calendar.

What this has enabled to me to do is those little projects that, when I pass them, I utter, "I really need to do that", but never have time.

Take yesterday, for example. I was able to not only clean out my hutch, emptying all its contents, washing them, drying them, dusting the shelves and replacing the items, but I was also able to clean off my desk (complete with paper decluttering), clean off the bookshelf in Mom's room (that I've been meaning to do since December!) and clean off all three shelves - which are also in her room (notice the trend?)

What that means for me today is I get to sit, quietly and do absolutely nothing if I choose to.

What a wonderful feeling.

Instead, I will cut and organize my coupons, finish my Bible study for the week, and continue reading the book I'm reading.

I am ready to tackle the week - and what a busy week it will be. But for the first time in awhile, I look on it, hopefully, instead of filled with dread.

May you all have a pleasant week ahead.

Until next time -

Brave: A Movie Review

http://disney.go.com/brave/
Yesterday, I got the chance to go see Brave, the newest movie from Disney Pixar, with my daughter's Girl Scout troop. The synopsis of the movie is very similar to most other modern-day Disney movies which feature a female main character: a princess who goes against the grain of what she is supposed to do and instead, does what she wants, only to realize the consequences of her actions. Merida's fate is to marry a first born son from one of the three surrounding tribes in order to keep peace among them. Her pickings are slim, at best.

So, she does what any hard-headed princess would do: she declares that she will win her own hand in marriage. (Yes, it confused her family and the surrounding tribes, too). And then she runs away. The sprites lead her to the cottage of an old wood carver and Merida, soon finds out she's a witch. She asks for a spell to change her mother. The witch warns her to be careful what she wishes for and soon, Merida regrets her wish.

Brave is more than just a movie about a rebellious teenager. This time around, I think Disney Pixar really got to the root of mother-daughter relationships and how incredibly fragile they can be. Merida wants to be heard; her mother wants Merida to realize that what she is doing for her is for - or what her mom perceives as - her own good. A classic mother/daughter struggle.

The movie had an incredibly slow start, in my opinion. I didn't really get "hooked" until after Merida storms off after the archery competition. From that point on, however, the movie not only picks up but really pulls you in.

Brave is a heart-warming story that reminds us that while we might change our fate, family remains the same; unwavering and steadfast in all of live's perilous adventures.

Fireproof - a Review

fireproofbanner
If you all remember, I had a date with the Man Beast Friday night at church. The Sweetheart Banquet included a steak dinner as well as a movie - Fireproof - a movie neither the MB or I had seen.

I wanted to see it so badly. MB didn't want to see it at all. But being the awesome husband that he is, he went and sat through it, knowing I wanted to see it so badly.

I will give you both of our reviews - based on how I felt about the movie and what the MB said after it.

But first, let me give you the briefest of synopsis:

Caleb and Katherine's marriage is in trouble. After seven years of marriage, they've grown apathetic towards each other and their relationship. Pretty soon, the D Word is mentioned. Both want out - Katherine is feeling unloved and unheard and Caleb feels like he gets respect from everywhere except in his own house. Caleb receives a little help from his best friend, Micheal who has gone through some rough spots in his own marriage. Caleb's dad, John, gives Caleb a book - The Love Dare - and challenges him to work through the 40 day exercise.

The first 20 days are rocky. Caleb's heart isn't it and he expects Katherine to see his efforts and thank him for them. (Admittedly, after being scorned for so long, what woman is going to recognize feeble attempts of wilted flowers and a poured cup of coffee?)

Slowly, Caleb comes around when he realizes that the way he's been treated by Katherine is the way he's been treating his Heavenly Father. As he opens his heart to his Father, his love for Katherine genuinely blossoms into a real love.

But is it to late to save his marriage? Has Caleb left his partner behind one too many times?

I really enjoyed the movie. If you liked Facing the Giants, you'll like Fireproof. The film was obviously made by amatures (remember, it was made by a local church). Kirk Cameron (Caleb's character), out-shown the rest of the cast. I wonder if it wouldn't have been less obvious if Kirk was out of the picture completely? I don't remember the acting being so ... not-Hollywood in FTG. I might have to pull it out and see.

There were a lot of places where you chuckle out loud. There were a few places where your heart catches in your throat. And yes, if you are a crier, then chances are, you will cry.

The Man Beast's take on the movie was overall positive. He liked the message - although he thought that the message got lost with a bit too much back-story. He was also disappointed, I think, at the Hollywood-izing of the story. There is a pretty big twist at the end of the movie, that I never saw coming. The MB said he saw it because it was a modern day story - and there is always a twist during a modern day story. (I did predict the really big thing that Caleb did to help Katherine - I wasn't completely surprised at the whole movie. I'm not that naive.)

Over all - good movie. If you get the chance to go see it with your man beast, take the opportunity. If you're single - get some girlfriends together and go see it. I believe it's a movie that will benefit everyone whose open to receive it's Message: married, divorced, widowed and singles. (Side note: The Boy watched snippets of it while he was in the back, cleaning up. He said there were parts that he almost cried at, too. After the movie, we had a pretty good talk about how marriage is forever. It's a life-long commitment. It takes work - but if both partners are in it, it can work)

Until next time...

I Have Seen 159 out of 239 Films

I've seen a lot of movies. Next on my list: Mama Mia! The Man Beast ordered it for me from Netflix (isn't he sweet?) There is absolutely no chance of him watching it with me...but it was sweet that he got it knowing that I was just wondering what all the hype was about.

Anyone wanna join me for some low-fat popcorn?

Blast from the Past

You'll never guess what The Man Beast was watching Sunday morning - a Power Rangers movie!

Do y'all remember Power Rangers? I don't because I never watched them. But I find it very funny that my husband, a grown man, watched a show from my high school days (1995), and the kiddos weren't even in the room!

I will tell you a few movies I do like - the cheesier the better:

  • Girls Just Want To Have Fun
Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt were fabulously fun in this movie. (And the boys at Maxim have it wrong - SJP does not look like a horse. I happen to believe she's beautiful because she is unique.)
  • Goonies
Sean Astin in braces. Can it get any cuter? Yes. Corey Feldman before his Surreal Life episode. Anyone in the mood for a Baby Ruth?
  • License to Drive
Do I secretly have a crush on the Cories? I don' think so...but this one sure was fun! (And I remember the dad being the same guy from Disney's Mr. Boogety. Do you remember that movie? It was waaay before Halloweentown or Twitches).
  • Breakfast Club
No 80s movie list is complete without the Brat Pack. So classic. (And I do have a thing for Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall - so you might as well include ALL of Molly's movies in my list).
  • Adventures in Babysitting
Elisabeth Shue was the greatest, wasn't she? I love it. And I love the opening sequence: He walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to dance. He looked mighty fine and so I thought I might take the chance... *sigh* What preteen didn't think that her dress was the coolest. Her hair was the coolest. Okay, maybe it was just me. I'm a slight dork. Now you finally know - I can come out of the closet.

Those are handful of my favorites. What were some of yours? (Careful now, you might just date yourself.Challenge Me!)

Hairspray

Hairspray
Hairspray

Have you seen it? Either the 1988 version of the 2007 version?

If you want to waste some time, giggle, and just have fun - I suggest seeing them. Yes, both of them.

If you aren't familiar with the storyline (where have you been - under a rock?), Hairspray is about Tracy Turnblad - a 'pleasantly plump' teen who loves to dance in the 1960s at a time in which certain dancing wasn't done and segregation was all the rage. She turns a local dance show (The Corny Collins Show) on it's ear when not only does she adopt a different dance, but fully supports segregation.

In the original movie, Tracy is played by Ricki Lake. She was really fun. In the second version, Tracy is played by new-comer Nikki Blonsky (is the fact that both were played by Nicki/Nikki coincidence?

Those who have seen the original will recognize some cameos in the new version - including none other than the original Tracy Turnblad herself!

Really, it's a funny, corny movie. It is rated PG for suggested sexuality, I bet. There are a lot of innuendos, so I wouldn't necessarily sit around the boob tube with the kiddos watching it. Remember Grease? Remember the suggestive themes presented in that movie? It's kind of like that.

Oh! And I almost forgot the greatest part! Edna Turnblad - Tracy's mom - is played by men in both versions. Davine in the 1988s and John Travolta in 2007. Oh it's a hoot! Very funny.

If you're looking for a rental - I recommend this one.

Until next time...

I'm wet...but I'm posting!

I took the kids to the Free Summer Movie program this morning with two of their friends. Coming back, I stopped by the library to return some books but they didn't open until noon. I was hungry, so I dropped the friends off and come home to fix the three of us lunch.

After lunch, I went to the library to return the books and movies we got last week. We have two big bags full of a new batch of books and movies. Then we went to Kroger.

I should have stayed home.

By the time we got to the store, it was pouring. By the time I walked out of the store with two items and two kids (no more, no less), the sky had opened up and it was a solid sheet of water.

I got wet.

I'm still wet.

And it is because I'm wet that I write this blog entry off line. (I live in small town American where, apparently, when it rains, all forms of life (both domestic and electronic) shut down.)

I promised to blog regularly and I'm going to keep to my word. I have decided that to help me do this, I'm going to have Themed Ramblings days. I've seen other bloggers do this and seems like it works out quite well.

Here is my schedule:

  • Monday -- Weekend Hijinx (around this house, you know there will be tons to tell)

  • Tuesday & Thursday -- Movie Musings (everything from rentals to at-the-movies to oldies-but-goodies)

  • Wednesday -- House Talk (menus, schedules, home improvements - everything house)

  • Thursday -- Book Banter (I'll share books I've read or books I'm reading)

  • Friday -- TGIF: Week Round Up

  • Saturday -- Up in the Air (and probably some goofy sounding stuff, too)

  • Sunday -- Spiritual Reflections

I'll see how it goes and I might mix it up a bit...but I think having a theme will help me keep an ever watchful eye on all that is my life and share about it in a way that hopefully doesn't make you click away or put you to sleep (of course, if you're an insomniac, you might want me to put you to sleep -- in which case, just ask. I'll be more than happy to oblige)

I mentioned that I took the kids and their friends to the movies this morning. The reason why the summer movies are free is because...well, they're reruns. But we don't' get out much, so sometimes, they're new to us.

Today was Evan Almighty. Totally not new to us but a definite favorite in this household.

For anyone who doesn't know (where have you been...under a rock?), Evan Almighty is about a Senator who wants to change the world. Little does he know that in order to do it, God wants him to build an ark.

It's a very cute movie and one I'd pretty much recommend to the over 7 crowd. The humor isn't too crude and the only 'OMGosh Factor' is when Evan says he's going to be pissed if it doesn't rain and when the youngest boy talks about an animal's penis.

Wanda Sykes plays Evan's Executive Assistant and she is hillarious. She brings her brand of humor to movie (loads of impromptu stuff, I assume) in a clean, family-friendly manner.

If you haven't see it, rent it. You'll be glad you did.

On Tuesday, just the kids and I went to see The Water Horse. This was a new-to-us movie. I sat beside a child who had seen it before and was always giving away the surprises (not that they weren't too hard to figure out anyway).

The story takes place in Scotland where a young boy visits a tide pool and finds a mysterious egg. With the help of the grounds keeper, he learns the meaning of friendship and of letting go.

I don't remember any bad words in the movie at all. Of course, I don't think there would be -- it was put out by Walden Media (the same ones who brought us Charlotte's Web and Bridge to Terrabithia). Shows how much I know. According to The Dove Foundation (not the soap people), there are quite a few words in the movie that you might find objectionable. So please, use your best judgment on this. What's okay in my eyes might not be for your's.

My six year old got a little antsy but my ten year old stayed enraptured the whole time.

There were slow points to it, so much in fact that I was surprised to learn that it was only an hour and a half long. But all in all, it was a good movie.

Again, if you haven't seen it, do yourself the favor and rent it. (Check your local library -- you can 'rent' it for free!)

Summer Movie Reviews Weeks 2 & 3

Our local movie theatre (like many of yours, I'm sure), offers free summer movies on Tuesdays and Thursdays for children. (Each week, two movies are run -- you go see one on Tuesdays and the other on Thursday) We missed the first week because I forgot about the program. We missed the second week due to VBS. We missed the third week's movie because of a punishment I doled out to my son and had to stick to (I hate that! The two movies showing last week were Monster House and Akeelah & the Bee. I was outvoted two-to-one, so we saw Monster House). This week, we saw Dreamer and Happy Feet.

I will be reviewing all three movies. Next week, I'll post a review on Tuesday and Thursday.

***

MONSTER HOUSE (PG) CGA -- DJ spends all of his free time staring out his bedroom window at the house across the street, home of grouchy Mr. Nubbercracker. Nubbercracker is so grouchy (how grouchy is he?) that he fusses at children who dare step on his lawn. As punishment, he confiscates their toys. When DJ goes across the street to retrieve his friend's basketball, Nubbercracker comes out, grabs DJ by the shirt and gives him a good what-for. Unfortunately, Nubbercracker dies and then things get really freaky. DJ, along with his friend, Chowder, and brainiac Jenny, believe that there is more the house than meets the eye.

I certainly don't want to give the whole movie away, but the plot was pretty transparent to a mom like me. (Hint: Misunderstood hero) The story kept the kids' attention, although there was quite a bit of adult-type humor that, luckily, went over the children's head. (There is reference to the uvula being a female body part as well as brief references to infidelity -- but you have to look closely.)

To the adult viewer, the story is one of true love and letting someone go. To the children, it's a funny movie with a happy/sad ending.

Mommy Review -- Thumbs up but I'd probably only sit through this once.

DJ/Lynne Review -- Thumbs up. They both said they would watch it regularly if we had the movie at home.

***

DREAMER (PG) Non-animated -- Stars Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russell, Kris Kristofferson and Elisabeth Shue. Fanning, Russell and Kristofferson play three generations of horse lovers. Russell is a horse trainer who makes other men rich. He and his father don't get along so well and Fanning is the loving link between them. When Russell advises his boss that the prize horse, Sonya, not race, his boss ignores his pleas and commands him to get the horse ready. Sonya takes a terrible fall and breaks her leg. When the boss (played by David Morse) tells Russell to put the animal down, he refuses. He gets fired and makes a deal with the boss to take Sonya off his hands. What follows in this simple decision is a lesson about believing in those you love and making dreams come true.

The movie wasn't exactly action packed (save for the horse racing -- that's very exciting). Dreamer could best be described as a family drama -- but not so over-the-top that the littlest ones don't get it. (Fanning, for example, sneaks out of her room at night to feed Sonya Popsicles. All the kids in the theatre giggled as they saw the Popsicle sticks lined up.)

The movie, in my opinion, was excellent and not actually one I would have gotten at the movie store. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see it. It was very good and I would recommend it to anyone. With the exception of a few mild curse words, there was nothing offensive in this movie to me. If you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing it.

***

HAPPY FEET (PG) CGA -- Mumble is a penguin who (literally) marches to the beat of his own drummer. In his world, the Emperor Penguins sing to one another to find a mate. Those who are compatible, start singing their 'heart song' together, in perfect harmony. Well, poor Mumble. He was dropped when he was just an egg and as a result, he can't sing -- at all! But, he can dance up a storm. His mother embraces his uniqueness and his father wants him to conform to the rest of the group. What's worse, the fish population is disappearing and the elder penguins are convinced that it's Mumble's fault. They are convinced that his dancing has upset the Great Guin. Mumble sets out to prove them wrong, convinced it is the work of the Aliens.
The movie is full of songs -- both newer and older. Several of the songs are suggestive but most of them are just plain fun. I didn't notice any cursing or any mock cursing. (ie in Hercules when Pain and Panic say "Oh my gods." Or in Madagascar when Marty says 'sugar, honey, iced tea"). Also, there is no death in the movie. The only questionable thing I would caution parents about is the group of rag-tag penguins (Adelie penguins) Mumble hangs out with once he's banished from the land (oh...I guess that was a spoiler, huh?) The Adelie penguins are portrayed as Hispanic and there is brief reference made by one of the elders about their character. Again, you have to really look to catch the various references.
I have to admit that I was very excited about seeing this movie -- especially after I had read a very unsavory review about it on a message board. There is no denying the global impact that the Aliens have on the penguins land. The mentor, Lovelace (a Rockhopper penguin), has a soda ring around his neck and through the whole movie, huge glaciers are constantly breaking into the water. They even come right out and talk about it toward the end of the movie when the Aliens (btw, the Aliens are humans) are discussing what should be done about the various projects destroying the penguins' food supply.
All in all, it was a fun movie. The music was great and it was fun to figure out which songs were being sung. It's definitely not a movie I would watch again unless forced (although, to be fair, I feel that way about most movies). DJ said he would watch it again while Lynne asked to go home in the middle of it.

Next week, I'll review Charlotte's Web and Zathura. I realize many of you have probably seen these a million times, but for those who are like me and don't get to the movies very often, I hope my reviews are helpful.
